Ah…the joys of summer. Sunshine, beaches, Disneyland’s new Cars exhibit, and earthquakes. Living in Southern California has it’s benefits.

One benefit of being out here is the constant nice weather. We can be healthy and ride bikes pretty much every day without worry that we’ll get wet. But it’s not the rain that I worry about, it’s the LA traffic slamming into me as I frantically pedal away. Cars seems to enjoy hitting pedestrians and cyclists out here so you’ve got to be smart.

We found a great trail through the San Gabriel Valley that is very safe and has some beautiful scenery, but it’s still too far a ride to get to for my child. I’m looking into bike hitch options. I think I’m going to get a Saris Bones RS.

I’ve looked at the other options and they all have good and bad. The roof racks have problems with low overhangs and it’s hard for shorter people to get the bikes up. Also I’d have to get a different roof rack for each vehicle. We’ve got a mix of vehicle types and the Saris Bones RS can attach to them all. I’d love a hitch rack but not all our vehicles have hitches either.

It’s been a while since I rode a bicycle regularly and was a little nervous on my first ride, but it was a lot of fun. Time to relearn what I knew as a kid but without a banana seat this time.

Have fun!
